Driving Mississippi’s Back Roads in Search of Main Street (and Finding Something Even More Special)
Some road trips start with a destination in mind, but sometimes, the real journey isn’t about where you’re going—it’s about what you find along the way.
This past weekend, my daughter Nora and I packed up the car and left our home in Biloxi, headed toward Meridian for a vendor event. The goal? To meet Mississippi small business owners, hear their stories, and better understand what drives them to create. But instead of sticking to the main highways, we took back roads and followed local tips from people on social media who said, “You’ve got to check this place out.”
That’s how we found ourselves in small shops, quirky corners, and unexpected places filled with the heart and soul of Mississippi’s maker community.
I started this business because I wanted a deeper sense of connection and meaning with my community. But even in these early days, it’s already been more meaningful than I ever imagined.
A Road Trip, a Lesson in Business, and a Little Inspiration
Nora is just 11, but she’s already watching, listening, and soaking up the world around her. On this trip, she wasn’t just a passenger—she was my right-hand helper. She helped set up the camera, hand out flyers, and even asked a few questions of her own.
She saw what it looks like when vendors speak about their passion. She learned that behind every item in a Mississippi handmade gifts shop, there’s a person who dared to create something meaningful—and put it into the world.
She also saw me get told no.
Not every vendor was interested in what Main Street Collective offers. Some didn’t need an online store. Others weren’t sure how a Mississippi vendor marketplace could help them. And that’s okay. Because that’s part of the journey—learning how to listen, pivot, and keep showing up with curiosity and kindness.
And then, something unexpected happened.
As we wound our way home through Mississippi’s scenic backroads, passing gas stations with hand-painted signs and old general stores still holding on, Nora’s imagination bloomed.
“Mom, I could make things and sell them when I grow up.”
“Maybe I could have my own shop one day…”
Her excitement was contagious. In that moment, I realized this wasn’t just a business trip—it was a spark. A window into what it means to dream, to build, and to believe in what’s possible.
Finding Our Own Main Street
Main Street isn’t just a physical place—it’s a spirit. It’s every shop owner daring to create, every handmade item crafted with love, every person chasing a dream in a small Mississippi town.
It’s also what I’m building through Main Street Collective—a place to support Mississippi artisans, to elevate stories, and to connect vendors with shoppers who want to shop local in Mississippi.
And maybe, just maybe, it’s also found in a quiet moment with your daughter. In the car. Dreaming.
Because one day, it might be her—setting up shop in a little town on Mississippi’s Main Street, selling handmade gifts of her own.
And I’ll be the one behind the camera, watching her dream out loud.
